PI for several translational research projects, founded both by competitive governmental grants and by private companies, focused on retinal detachment, epiretinal membrane, macular hole, cell replacement, endo-tamponade, intraocular temperature, intraocular devices toxicity, phaco and vitrectomy system, degenerative ocular disease including age related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. He completed his training with: fellowship in vitreoretinal diseases at the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary (USA) 2005-2006 and a fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital (UK) 2007-2008. The professor Romano was also awarded the title of Cavaliere Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana. He also practices national and international endurance competitions (ironman, marathons and ultramarathons).
