Medically-qualified Research and Clinical Microbiologist. Licensed for practicing Medicine and Clinical Microbiology in the EU and Switzerland. Served as Full Professor of Medical Microbiology at the Italian Universities of Pisa, Sassari, Pavia, and Insubria. Visiting Professor at the Universities of Reims and Tokyo. Director, Department of Pathology; Director, Clinical Microbiology (University Hospital in Varese).
Mentor of over 50 PhD candidates and postdocs. Has been responsible for financial (7 ME turnover), quality, and strategic management of Clinical Microbiology and Virology at a Tertiary Care Hospital in Varese. Clinical activities grew by 10-20% year over year. In 2015, the lab was renewed with state-of-the art technologies and biological safety up to the BSL3 level. Research: viral etiology of chronic disorders (diabetes, post-polio syndrome, chronic cardiomyopathy, thyroid autoimmune conditions); molecular microbiology, antimicrobial immunity, vaccines.
